Everything is Quiet Now

Everthing is quiet now
The kids are grown
With homes of their own,
And everything is quiet now.

The silence speaks
of memories and loss,
Of times gone by
Never to return.

No giggles, no shouts,
No running about.
I've never heard...
Such emptiness.

I'm tempted to fill the space around me with noise,
The t.v., music...some sound
But I hold myself back to listen to
The silence, the quiet, the emptiness.

It is palpable, tangible and real,
I let myself feel the longing for the times I let slip away.
Thinking it'd never end, that we'd always have other days
To live, love, laugh, and play.

Everything is quiet now,
The kids are grown
With homes of their own,

And everything is quiet now.
